This is a course for intermediate-to-advanced level practitioners
Some skills / knowledge you should have include
Prior experience with Google Looker Studio
Comfort connecting data to Looker Studio and using that data to build a chart in Looker Studio
Comfort making basic visualizations in any platform
Experience writing SQL queries that involve JOINs
Experience with the data & reporting work that support pro-democracy advocacy and organizing
Black, Indigenous, other People of Color, women, queer, trans, those with disabilities and other individuals from underrepresented and marginalized communities are strongly encouraged to apply

For students to whom cost is a barrier, we have full and partial tuition scholarships available. Please indicate the amount of scholarship support you require on your application, and we’ll do our best to accommodate. The Advanced Data Visualization application form this is the core part of your application where we get to learn about your experience, background, skills and motivation or taking the course.
The Advanced Data Visualization application form includes a technical assessment aimed to give us a better sense of your existing SQL skills, a foundational language for other skills and tools you'll learn in Advanced Data Visualization. We use the technical assessment as part of getting a holistic picture of your application.
That’s it. We have all the information we need from you. From time of receipt of your application, it should take us approximately 5-7 days to make a determination though depending on various factors it make take shorter or longer.
About This Class
As data grows ever more integral to movement work, it is vital that organizations and individuals have the tools and skills to access, analyze & visualize programmatic, operational & fundraising data and the ability to tell stories about those data the drive organizational decision making. In this 18-hour, live online course, instructors from Generation Data will teach intermediate level data practitioners currently working in or aspiring to work in progressive + pro-democracy organizations key tools, concepts, and best practices associated with movement data visualization and storytelling.

What You’ll Learn / Gain
Foundational Data Visualization (2 hours): Intermediate skills in Looker Studio, and R/python for creating visualizations
Advanced Data Visualization Theory (1 hour): Advanced concepts using Looker Studio, Tableau, and Periscope for complex visual analytics.
Hands-On Tool Training (4 hours): Practical sessions with Looker Studio, R, and datawrapper for real-world campaign applications.
Advanced Technical Skills (4 hours): Custom visualization development with python libraries and R techniques.
Data Storytelling (2 hours): Constructing special topics that discuss compelling narratives and effective communication
Capstone Project and Review (1 hour): Applying skills in a comprehensive project with peer reviews and feedback from instructors.
Certificate of Completion: Recognition of your new skills and knowledge in data visualization.
Time Commitment / Schedule
Advanced Data Visualization will meet August 13th - August 29th, Tuesdays & Thursdays from 6:00-9:00pm EST. There will generally be 30 minutes of optional office hour time after each course as well as other times during the 4 week class window. Participants should expect to put in 20-30 hours total between formal training and independent work time including the final project. We’ll accept up to 30 students for this program on a rolling basis, so please apply early to increase your chances of being accepted.
What If I Have to Miss a Class or Two?
No worries. All sessions are recorded. You’ll have the opportunity to watch classes you miss, review slides and presentations, and get the support you need via office hours and our Slack community.
Learning Accommodations
We’re continually trying to make our trainings as accessible as possible to all styles of learners and those who may have specific learning challenges. That said, we’re both small organizations and don’t currently have any experts in learning accessibility design on staff. During the application process, we’ll provide space for you to let us know of any accommodations you may need, and we’ll let you know if we are able to accommodate you.
